Ex-MAS Fintech Chief Sopnendu Mohanty Takes Helm at GFTN

Mohanty's move marks a new chapter in his career after nearly a decade of shaping Singapore's fintech landscape.

Sopnendu Mohanty, the former chief fintech officer of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has announced his appointment as the Group CEO of the Global Finance & Technology Network Ltd (GFTN).

GFTN, established by MAS, is a global platform fostering collaboration between governments, businesses, academia, and civil society to drive technological innovation in financial services. The organization operates through two commercial subsidiaries: GFTN Services, focused on forums, advisory, and platforms, and GFTN Capital, its investment arm.

During his nine years and seven months at MAS, Mohanty spearheaded the development of Singapore into a leading global fintech hub. His accomplishments include the launch of Paynow, revolutionizing digital payments in the region and promoting financial inclusivity through cross-border connectivity. He also led the creation of key platforms such as APIX, Proxtera, SGFnDex, Green Print, and Elevandi, which have been instrumental in driving technological advancements within the sector. Furthermore, Mohanty initiated significant policy changes, ranging from payment regulations to the sandbox framework, and was the driving force behind the iconic Singapore Fintech Festival.

"Exciting new chapter"

In an email today, Mohanty described his new role as an "exciting new chapter" following 18 years in the corporate sector and 10 years in public service. He expressed his intention to focus on "making a positive impact" in the next decade through an entrepreneurial approach. Notably, Mohanty will continue his association with MAS as an advisor, contributing to the next phase of fintech growth.

Mohanty will be working alongside Ravi Menon, former managing director of MAS and current Climate Ambassador for Singapore, who serves as Chairman of GFTN. Together with a distinguished Global Advisory Board, they aim to establish GFTN as a leading global advisory and investment firm, offering services spanning forums, consulting, digital solutions, and venture capital investments. Their vision is to enhance financial services globally for the benefit of all.

GFTN has begun 2025 with significant momentum, participating in events like the Inclusive FinTech Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, and the GFTN Forum in Tokyo, Japan. The organization is also actively engaged with governments on policy and strategy development, including innovation hub development.
