Donald Trump Hypes Crypto as Joe Biden "Kills" Crypto
Donald Trump might just be cryptocurrency's biggest advocate yet after revealing he will accept digital tokens for campaign donations.
In clips circulating on X, Trump was asked if people can donate with crypto. “If you can’t, I’ll make sure you can,” Trump responded. “Can we donate to the Trump campaign using crypto? I believe the answer is yes.”
In another clip, Trump said President Joe Biden “doesn’t even know” what cryptocurrency is. Taking a broader swing at the Democrats, Trump said their party is "very much against [crypto]."
He also took a swing at SEC Chair Gary Gensler, stating "Gensler is very much against [crypto]."
Unlike Gensler and the Democrats, Trump said, "A lot of people are very much for [crypto]... And I'm fine with it. I want to make sure it's good and solid and everything else but I'm good with it."
"If you're in favor of crypto, you'd better vote for Trump," he concluded.
Trump reportedly made the comments at a meeting with the buyers of his Mugshot Edition NFTs. Invitees to the dinner each bought more than 47 NFTs each, priced at $99.
When asked whether he intends to keep crypto businesses in America, Trump replied, “If crypto is moving out of the U.S. because of hostility toward crypto… well, we’ll stop it. We don’t want that. If we’re going to embrace it, we have to let them be here.”
Meanwhile, Biden has drawn criticism from the crypto community. On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives passed a resolution rejecting Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) guidance on cryptocurrency accounting.
Industry advocates argued that the SEC's guidance had discouraged banks from serving crypto customers. Biden has pledged to veto the resolution.
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson described Biden's move as a "coordinated effort to kill crypto" and the latest in what he called "Operation Chokepoint 2.0."
“This November, if you vote for Joe Biden as a cryptocurrency holder, please understand that the intent of this administration is to destroy the American cryptocurrency industry,” he said on X. "Understand that. It’s unambiguously clear.”
